Abstract
Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) allows diagonal and nondiagonal matrix elements of the magnetic dipole moment operator to be determined experimentally. MCD measurements at various temperatures down to $4^{\circ}K$ are of great aid in clarifying spectral assignments of broad bands and have no counterpart in spectroscopy. This will be demonstrated in the particular examples of the transitions $^{4}I_{9/2}-^{2}P_{1/2}$ of $Nd^{2+}$ in $CaWO_{4}$ and $^{3}H_{4} - ^{2}P_{o}$ in $AILaO_{3}$.
