Abstract

At the Spectroscopy Division of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, there is an ongoing programme of research relating to the study of the electronic spectra of diatomic molecules and radicals. A 10.6 m Ebert grating spectrograph set up some years ago in the laboratory and a few other smaller grating and prism spectrograph are being used to carry out systematic investigation on several molecules which include some hydrides and a host of heavier ones like $AIO, NS, S_{2} \ldots$ to name a few. A flash photolysis set up coupled to a suitable spectrograph has helped to obtain and identify new radicals like HCCS, HCCO etc. Identification of new electronic states or new electronic transitions and the characterization of the new radicals are the main objectives of these studies. The rotational intensity distribution in the spectra of some of the molecules have been investigated from the theoretical and experimental standpoints. From this, important conclusions could be drawn regarding the nature of the electronic states. The fluorescence specta of $I_{2}$ and $Na_{2}$ excited by $Ar^{+}$ and He-Ne laser lines have been studied leading to useful conclusion on the electronic transition moment functions in the related transitions. Results of these studies will be highlighted in the talk.
