Abstract

Far-infrared spectra ($50-250 cm^{-1}$) were obtained for solutions of the halogen substituted phenols, HO [FIGURE] in cyclohexane. For each compound, assignment of the intermolecular hydrogen bond stretching frequency ${\nu_{\sigma}}$ was confirmed by the decrease in intensity and narrowing of the band upon successive dilution of the halophenol in the solvent. More precise assignments of band centers have been made by this technique, allowing more accurate hydrogen bond force constants to be calculated.
