This collection of digitized glass slides documents the work of the Department of Forestry (today the School of Environment and Natural Resources) at the Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station/Ohio Agricultural Resource and Development Center from 1886-1977.
Highlights of this collection are images of New Deal Programs under the Resettlement Administration, Works Progress Administration, and the Civilian Conservation Corps. The CCC images are most prolific, including many camp and work photos. The Resettlement Administration images document rural life in Ohio in the 1930s, especially of the Mohican State Park area in Ashland County and Vincent County.
The 1948 Strip Coal Mining Act placed the reclamation of affected areas under the supervision of the Director of the Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station and State Forester. Images include strip mine operations, ungraded strip mined land, graded strip mined land, and experimental planting on both ungraded and graded strip mined land.
Other work involves tree planting demonstrations, development of state parks and forest fire protection, documenting experimental woodlots, and problems of forestry like bugs, grazing, and disease, including American Chestnut blight. Graphs, charts, maps, and posters provide forestry data and information for landowners and farmers.
Images of interest from Ohio Forestry Association gatherings, 4-H camps, county extension outings to state parks, and county and state fairs provide insight into the cultural, social, and educational aspects of the Department of Forestry.
